Upper Primary english language description Upper Primary is a crucial stage in a child's learning journey where foundational literacy skills are developed. During this stage, children are introduced to the basics of reading, writing, speaking and listening. The goal is to build confidence in language use through fun, structured and meaningful activities.

Activities & Outcomes

  • 1. Spellings Children learn to spell simple and high-frequency words through: Phonics-based spelling (e.g., cat, hat, bat). Word families (e.g., -at, -an, -ig). Sight words (e.g., the, said, come). Spelling tests and games to reinforce memory Example word list: run, big, play, jump, blue, help.
  • 2. Paragraphs / Speeches / Vocabulary Building (Theory) Children are introduced to new vocabulary through: Short paragraphs simple speeches or story retelling picture descriptions classroom discussions Example paragraph: I have a dog. His name is Max. Max is brown and white. He runs fast and likes to play. I feed him every day. He is my best friend. New words introduced: pet, feed, friend, fast, brown.
  • 3. Sound Patterns Focus is placed on phonemic awareness and sound recognition: Blending sounds: c-a-t = cat. Rhyming words: sun, fun, run beginning / middle / ending sounds Digraphs: sh, ch, th, wh. Vowel teams: ai, ee, oa, ie. Sound pattern activity: Find rhyming words: “The cat sat on the mat.” – What rhymes with "cat"?.
  • 4. Comprehension questions children practice reading short texts and answering questions to check understanding.

These builds: Attention to detail vocabulary recognition sentence structure understanding.

Sample Comprehension: Text Anna has a red kite. She flies it in the park. The kite goes up, up, up! It is a windy day.

Questions: What color is Anna’s kite? Where does she fly it? What is the weather like? These components work together to create a strong base in English language learning. Lessons are kept fun, visual,  interactive and making literacy engaging for young learners.
